Getting the photograph right in camera without flash

I was having a conversation about photography which led on to me saying when I reach a venue I always talk to the officant to see where they would like me to stand throughout the wedding ceremony and whether I can use flash or not. I described a wedding where I couldn't use flash for parts of the ceremony.

Me: I shot the whole wedding ceremony without flash.
Them: How did that go? Did the wedding photographs come out?
Me: Yes.
Them: I guess you could lighten them in the computer.
Me: I guess I could, but I got the exposure right in camera.

Professional wedding photographers carry cameras and lenses to allow them to work at low light levels without flash, should it not be permitted during your wedding ceremony.

Photo Challenge [4] Coldest day of year = experiment

As Monday was the first snow of 2009, and it looks like the weather will remain at minus temperatures all week... time for a photographic challenge....

This challenge is to find alternative light sources to light your photographs.

Can you guess what I used to light these test photos.....

Open log fire..... no

It is a halogen heater - giving out delicious orange light as well as heat.

If that is not enough of a challenge for you - try freezing bubbles and photographing them as mentioned in today's Metro paper.

What not to wear at weddings

That's me at my sister's wedding. In defense of this photo...

  • it was the first wedding I ever went to
  • it was 1989 - I was only 15
  • my mother always brought me clothes larger so I would 'grow' into them

The Beast of Thamesmead

There is a strange black cat that comes into the garden once in a while. It is actually a rather nice cat and not a beast at all. Sometimes it tries to sneak into the house, but runs away when spotted. My cats were rather scared of it at first - but seem all right now. Here is a photo of my cat following the strange cat - I don't know why! (This is the closest photo I could get on my P&S camera as it keeps running away!)

Could it be the Beast of Bexley? ummm probably not.

In the 1st century B.C. in Rome, the cake was thrown at the bride or broken over her head as one of the many fertility symbols which then were a part of the marriage ceremony. Cutting the wedding cake together, still a predominant ritual at weddings, symbolizes the couple's unity, their shared future, and their life together as one. The three tiered cake is believed to have been inspired by the spire of Saint Bride's Church in London, England.

Wedding photographer gets a haircut!

Yes, this wedding photographer has treated herself to a new haircut. Nothing like a new haircut to make you look and feel great!

My hair growing out + get wet = frizzy! It has been at one point described by my friend as looking as like the Lion King - a big mane!

My hairdresser gave me a tip of how to keep your hair looking salon fresh for up to two weeks. So I am sharing that secret with all you brides to be! Put your hand on the middle of your head. Comb your hair down and around your head, clip it in place. Final step is wrap in scarf. In the morning, just comb and go!

Rain and Peter Kwan took their own DIY wedding shots - not on the actual BIG day but afterwards in many cities like London, Oxford and Paris. To me, they were like the forerunners for the Trash the Dress movement (without actually trashing the dress!) More like a Have Dress Will Travel session! I must admit that this is one of my favourite sites - the idea being so unique! Check them out on diy wedding photos. com. Peter has become a professional since this fun experiment. His professional site can be found at sincethefirstsight.com.

That's all I have for you... go and enjoy Christmas!
